103 one time there was a gentile king here called Cirimay Pirincal, who was a great lord. When the Mouros from Mecca discovered India, they began to sail here and came to Malabar for pepper, which they started to load at Quilon, which is a city with a sea port, where the king was often staying. This happened at least six hundred years ago, because the Indians at that time adopted the Mouros calendar. After having sailed to India for many years, they started to travel to other parts and entered into such dialogue with the king and he with them, that they managed to convert him to the loathsome idolatry of Mohammed, which is why he accompanied them on their return voyage home to Mecca, where he died, or as it seems on the way there, because it is said that the Malabars never heard of him again. Thus, he left three kings in Malabar, independent of each other, but none other than his nephew, who became the King of Calicut, could mint coins. And having shared out his lands thus, the old man set sail. The nephew left on that beach founded a city there to which he gave the name Calicut, and the Mouros, in memory of the fact that the Indian king had embarked on that beach to go and become a Mouros began
