114 men place the cane, that the said litter hangs from, on their shoulders. The king takes an inordinate number of gold crowns and precious stones and wears a thick and rich anklet on his right leg. Many metal instruments are played ahead of him, along with many archer nairs with their English style bows and arrows; others carry long spears with a two-foot long tip, with small metal rings on the opposite end, which shake as they go, making a huge racket; and other nairs who carry oval shields and bare swords in their hands, and other rings on their hilts with which they make a huge din, shouting “go, go” to each other at the tops of their voices in their language. Some make swordplay in front of the king, and force their opponents out so that the king notices them. They are fast and excellent swordsmen, and in their opinion fencing is an even more honourable sport, thanfine horsemanship is in ours. The king stops from time to time to let them play for his pleasure, praising and supporting the better ones. The king has a page in front of him to carry his sword and shield. Another carries his golden rapier, whilst another carries the sword that belonged to the king who ruled over the whole of Malabar and who became a Mouros, and in his left hand he carries a fleur de lys. There are two men on each side of him, one with a large, round fan, and the other with a different fan made of a white tail from an animal similar to a horse, which is highly esteemed by them. They put it on a gold rod, and two of them fan from one side and two from the other. Apage walks on his right with a jug of water, another on his left carries a silver jug, and another page a towel. Whenever the king puts his hand on his nose, eyes or mouth, he tips water from the jug onto his hands, and the other one gives him a towel to wipe himself. He also takes other pages with him, one on the right side carrying a golden goblet, and another on the left side carrying a silver goblet, into which he spits the betel that he is always chewing and which is given to him by another page.. Two large round pitchers of water are brought behind him, a silver one on the left
