Nearby, to the South, there is an ancient village called Mardayi, which is thriving and well supplied with food, inhabited by Mouros and gentiles, Jews who speak the local language and who have been living here for a long time. Some four or five leagues inland from this city, there is a very large Mouros and gentile city called Taliparamba, which has a lot of trade with the merchants from Vijayanagara and where a lot of copper is consumed. Heading South along the coast from Vallarepattanam, one comes to a very large city of Mouros and gentiles, called Cannanore. There are so many merchants, many have ships, some large, some small, they trade in all sorts of merchandise with Cambay; Hormuz; Coromandel; Dabhol; Chaul; Banda; Goa, Ceylon and the Maldive Islands. Our Lord and King has a fortress and factory in this city, for trade, in complete peace; love and safety. There is a town of local Christians, married with wives and children, around the fortress. After it had been built, they converted to our holy faith and continue to convert every day. Going South along the coast past this city, one comes to a Mouros village called Edakkad. They are native to this land and have sailing ships. Beyond this village, there is a river with two navigable branches that surround the city of Dharmadam, inhabited by native Mouros. They are very wealthy merchants who own a lot of large ships. This is the last place belonging to the King of Cannanore before Calicut. There are many beautiful mosques belonging to the Mouros, who are so rich and powerful that any slight upon them has them and the city up in arms. Hence, the king has to often come here to calm them down
