A Momentous Journey

144 are divided between two nair lords who govern them. Beyond these places, one comes to a river called the Puttupanam, where there is a Mouros village with a lot of merchandise and shipping. This is where the kingdom of Calicut begins. Along the coast from this village stands another one called Tikkodi, and beyond that, another called Pantalayini. One then comes to another with a small river called the Kappat, where there are many ships. This place has a lot of trade and many vessels; many soft sapphires can be found on its beach. Two leagues beyond this village lies the city of Calicut where there were and still are more foreign traders than local ones, where Our Lord and King, at the local king’s behest, has a very strong fortress. There is a river beyond this city to the South, in which another city called Chaliyam stands, where many local Mouros merchants have sailingships. Another city, called Parappanangadi, belonging to the king of Calicut himself lies beyond this river and the city. It is inhabited by many Mouros and gentiles and has a busy trade; after this one comes to two Mouros villages which are five leagues apart from each other, one is called Paravana and the other Tanur. Their lord lives inland from them; he sometimes rebels against the King of Calicut and the villages do not obey him; these two villages have trade in many different goods and some principal merchants live there. Heading further South along the coast, one comes to a river called in which a city called Ponnani stands. It is inhabited by local Mouros and some gentiles. There are many rich merchants with a lot of ships. The King of Calicut earns a lot of revenue from customs duties in this city; beyond it, one comes to a river called the Chetwai. There are many gentile villages along its banks and a lot of silver (sic) [pepper] is dispatched from here, and further along the coast one comes to another river which is the border with the kingdom of Kochi. On the near bank stands a town called Cranganor, which provides the King of Kochi with some duty revenue.
