53 The commender of the said fleet was Afonso de Albuquerque. He wished to make peace with them, but they did not want to. When Afonso deAlbuquerque saw this, he begun to wage war on the kingdom. Especially on the seaports where he caused a lot of damage. After doing so, he came with a wholefleet to the city of Hormuz. Here, there was a fearsomefight in the harbour, with afleet with a great many ships full of fine-looking and well-armed people. The said Afonso de Albuquerque defeated them and took many of them prisoner; sunk many ships and took and burned many others that were moored close to the city walls. When the King and the governor saw such destruction among their people and their ships, they sued for peace. This the captain accepted on the condition that they would allow him to build a fortress at one end of the city. They agreed to this and so it started to be built. Then the Moors regretted what they had done and did not want the building to continue. When the captain of thefleet heard this, he laid them to waste again so much, killing so many people that he made them tributaries of the King of Portugal. They engaged themselves in a payment offifteen thousand gold xerafins per year, which they always pay. This king and governors of Hormuz, a few years later, sent and embassy to the King of Portugal with a great many gifts. Afonso de Albuquerque himself took the reply of the King of Portugalto Hormuz at the head of an enormous fleet. There he was received in great peace and allowed tofinish the fortress that he had begun before. He ordered that work should start immediately and that a strong and large fort be made. This was complied. The King, who at this time being a young lad saw that he was in the hands of the governor; he was too timid to dare do anything by himself. But he found a way to secretly tell the captain of the fleet of his lack of freedom, and how the governor was practically holding him prisoner. And thus taking over the realm by force, having taken it from the previous ruler, and it seemed to him that he was conniving with
