72 ships from other parts and zambucos, which come from Malabar laden with areca nuts, coconuts; spices and other goods and they take others from here which are used in Malabar. Tanamajambu Along the coast, ahead of Vasai, there is a fortress of the King of Gujarat called Tanamajambu. There is a very pretty Mouros village around it, with many Mouros mosques, and gentile temples, and which is almost at the end of the kingdom of Cambay. It is a good seaport, with quite a lot of trade, where there are many pirates with small boats, like look-outs, who come out to sea and whenever they see a ship that is not too big for them, they take it and rob it and sometimes kill its crew. The End of theKingdomof Gujarat and a short list of themerchandise in it Here we come to the end of the rich kingdom of Gujarat and Cambay, where there are many horses, which they take from here to the kings of India; Arabia; Persia and many cotton fabrics for sails and other cloths, some of which are thick, white ones, that the ships are laden with to take to Arabia; Persia; India; Malacca; Sumatra; Malindi; Mogadishu, and Mombasa. And there is a great variety of other coloured cloths; silk fabrics; carnelians; sesame; wormbush; muskroot; tutenag; borax; opium; fine indigo in cakes, and another of less quality; and many other remedies unknown to us, which are highly cherished in Malacca and China where they have a high value, such as cachopucho [1] and frankincense from Shihr a lot of wheat, millet and an abundance of rice; sesame; grains; chickpeas; beans and many other vegetables, that we do not have in our country. All this is very cheap and is taken to all places. 1. Translator's note: Later on in the text, the terms cacho andpucho are written separately and refer to two different substances. Basing ourselves on the explanations given in Delgado'sGlossário Luso-Asiático, cacho would refer to Senegalia Polyacanthaor white thorn tree oil, and pucho to Saussarea Lappa or costus root. Alternatively, cachopucho could be construed as the Portuguese adaptation ofCajuput.
