80 his carracks; caravels, and galleons, and sailed up river and attacked the city, capturing it by force. Many noteworthy things occurred in this episode, but I shall not go into them here to be brief, because it is not my intention to write a chronicle, but rather a brief summary of what I learned about the famous places in India. Coming back to my story, many people from the city and under its protection died in this encounter, and the ships they were preparing were captured and many others burned. The merchants from Hormuz load up their ships here with rice; iron; pepper; ginger and many other spices and remedies that they take back; and Our Lord and King orders that they be treated more favourably in all this business than they were by the Mouros kings. The king of this land and the whole of the kingdom of Deccan is called Mahmud Shah. He is a Mouros and he is always in a city called Bidar, where he is very comfortable and leads a very good life. He does not rule nor do anything about its government, putting everything in the hands of some Mouros lords for them to govern it. He gives some towns and cities to each of them to govern; and if one should rise against him,
