105 looks towards his son and laments, “Behold the face of one soon to be orphaned!” Observers comment as the scene unfolds: “Qarqara is mounted on horseback. He is armed with a spear. The zebra is released. Startled, the horse bolts.” Qarqara’s spear slips from his grasp as the horse charges. Clinging desperately to the horse’s neck, Qarqara lets out a scream. The onlookers, laughing, observe: “Qarqara has tumbled from the horse.” Mud-splattered, with only his eyes visible, Qarqara is brought to Al-Nuʿmān ibn al-Munẓir, clutching strands of the horse’s mane. Al-Nuʿmān ibn al-Munẓir, unable to contain his mirth, laughs heartily.
