107 Al-Nuʿmān ibn al-Munẓir queries: “Who remains in the waiting chamber?” Al-Ḥājib ʿEṣām reports: “Indeed, my Lord, two notables from al-Ḥīra are present, accompanied by another man. Upon inquiry, they said he was a poet.” Al-Nuʿmān ibn al-Munẓir instructs: “Bring them forth.” The two notables from al-Ḥīra enter with the poet, greeting the king: “Good morning, O King!” Al-Nuʿmān ibn al-Munẓir, curious, asks: “So, this is the poet? Let us hear his verse.” The poet steps forward and begins to recite: It reached mine ears – may curses never find thee – That with me thou art displeased, most unkindly.
