102 against all odds, the king and his wazir became very close friends and the marriage of the Queen’s daughter to the wazir’s son consolidated their friendship. * Years passed and the kingdom of Hormuz started to witness threats of invasion from the Persian forces. Then the English and the Persians held an alliance and agreed to rid Persia of the Portuguese occupation. The Portuguese and the king of Hormuz, however, seemed to be oblivious to what was going on around them. To their surprise, on 21 February 1622, English ships arrived to Hormuz Island and the soldiers disembarked. They were met with no resistance. This was followed by Persian forces which entered the city of Hormuz and ransacked it. They then set it on fire and inflicted grave destruction on the city. The Portuguese, the king of Hormuz and his family as well as the wazir, all took refuge in the fortress. Then, negotiations between the English and the Portuguese command began for the surrender of the fortress. As the Portuguese refused, the English
