_ 100 _ until they wrecked them all with the stones which fell in large portions from them, as well as from the stone shots they discharged subsequently which fell on to the Fortress, causing us great damage, and wounded and killed some of the men and caused great dread among the people for it greatly affronted us. In this manner they fought us the Tuesday, on Wednesday they raised the artillery and carried it on board, for meanwhile that they thus assaulted us they had surrounded us and taken the whole of the sea, so much so, that not a thing could come in to us, and they exercised great watchfulness; hence we were greatly harassed and fatigued both on the land side as by sea. We caused them no small damage because all the mantlets and bastions they placed we broke and scattered them killing great numbers and some of the principal men, among the latter being their Field Marshal and Constable, and we also broke one of their espalhafato and the largest. Lastly we gave them so much trouble and placed them in such risk of being lost, that for this reason, as well as because they were short of ammunition, powder and other artificies of war, of which a large portion had been lost in the galleon that went to the bottom when they crossed the Strait coming towards here, they were constrained and compelled to desist and raise the siege.
