Amazed at his zeal and fervour, the people then asked him, for the love of God, to agree to build a college in Chaul before his departure. Then the Vicar(A), throwing himself at his feet, pleaded with him with great insistence to accept the house of Sao Sebastiao which he straightaway vacated for the Society. According to what I myself heard on that day, the people immediately gave four hundred pardaus for a shelter to be built in which a Father and a Brother were to be lodged, until the college was built. These people assumed the obligation of building it, at their own expense, and of contributing what was needed for its maintenance. The Father [217r] excused himself with the most profound humility, stating that he was a servant of the Society and that he on his own could do nothing.(B) As soon as Father Superior Gaspar arrived in this College of Goa from Ormuz, he began without delay to walk (A) The name of the Vicar, whose virtue is praised by the Mayor of Chaul is not known (Cf.
