_ 156 _ now on to preach outside the church. It was so arranged that I should not preach outside the Cathedral, where I am accustomed to preach as it is a large church, or in St Francis’s church as previously, because the Fathers asked me to do it that way. It was also arranged for Father Superior Belchior to substitute for me in the main church because he says that a crowd of people gives him greater heart. We cannot go to the many places that they ask us to preach in. We organized penitential sermons on Friday evenings with scourging’s at the end. There were so many people that they cannot fit into the church. They weep copiously during the sermon. I also pray every Sunday morning and on feast days, as well as in the evenings. I now go about declaring a papal Jubilee, which begins on the birthday [of Christ] 1552(A). We hear confession until mid-day, and there are many. We occupy the evenings in fostering friendships, visiting the curable and incurably sick and the hospitals. I also preach to the prisoners after dinner on Fridays, (A) That is 25th December 1551, when the new year began its rites following the style of Christmas.
