_ 162 _ captain-major was Fernando Soares de Albergaria, who sailed in the carracks “São Boaventura". When these matters had been dealt with, the viceroy embarked at the end of October and set sail with a fleet of more than eighty ships, amongst which were more than thirty large ones. When they were under way, they followed their route with favourable easterly winds and in a few days arrived in Diu. There the viceroy found a light craft which had come from Ormuz, with letters from Dom Alvaro de Noronha, in which he informed him that the galleys had retired to Basra. He gave him a very detailed account of all that had happened both in Muscat and Ormuz. The Viceroy was deeply affected by the business of Muscat. Before long, news spread that the galleys had left. Everyone was deeply disappointed because they were eager to test their skill against them. The viceroy summoned the old captains, showed them the letter and put before the council what he intended to do in that matter. When these things had been seen by everyone, it was agreed that, since the Turks had left, they should send a sizeable fleet to patrol the Strait of Ormuz and to go to that fortress during the winter to protect it, and that the viceroy should return to Goa.
