_ 273 _ hand over the said Kingdom, so that, each time he or his governors should ask for it, he would surrender it freely.(A) He imposed a tribute of fifteen thousand xerafins a year on him, for the maintenance of the fortress that he had built in that city. Item: And so I learned, through certain information from people who knew him well, that four or five years more or less, from the time that Afonso de Albuquerque made the said contract mentioned above, Antonio de Saldanha as Captain General of a fleet had arrived at the said city and fortress. He agreed with the King Torun Shah that, because of the friendship Our Lord the King had with him, and the great expense of the large fleets that the said Lord had built and brought to these parts, he the said King Torun Shah should give ten thousand extra xerafíns each year, on top of the fifteen thousand that he had previously given to Our Lord the King, making in all twenty-five thousand xerafins. The said King took this in good part and thus agreed to pay the money in tribute to Our Lord the King, Dom Manuel, who was reigning at the time. This tribute would be collected in perpetuity.
