The Portuguese in the Sea of Oman

_ 320 _ see from his letters that he has achieved much in that country. (A)(B) 59. According to what is said in a letter, Father M Gaspar has taken care that the Fathers who go to the various countries should write some months before the departure of the naus so that the news which goes to Portugal is not as imperfect as it always used to be. But this is not possible since there are many Fathers, indeed almost all of them, who spend a year or at times two during which they have no news of us nor do we have news of them due to the great distance which lies between us. As do those in the Moluccas Islands, which is a long journey, as are Japan, Malacca and Ormuz from where accurate news does not reach us, except from their letters if they are given to us. I will speak of the rest and of what occurs to me and reaches me, and from this you will be able to extract what is necessary to send to Rome. And next year, with divine favour and assistance, more will be written for you to send on to the Fathers, so that the news from these parts will be better and more perfectly understood, to the glory of the Lord. (A) He wrote the letter on 20 October 1554 (doc 26). (B) In no. 47.
