_ 321 _ 60. Father Antonio d'Heredia and a Brother are in the city of Ormuz (as has already been said(A)). This is an island which is small and dry, having none of its own supplies since the entire land is salt. Everything is brought there by sea in large quantities. It lies at the mouth of the strait of Basra, to the north lies Persia at some two leagues distance. In Persia they are all Moors of many nationalities according to which kingdom they are in. To the south is Arabia, lying nine or ten leagues distant, and they too are all Moors. In these two countries, many y4 are the subjects of the king of Ormuz, being on the island which is the vassal of the King of Portugal. On this island is a large city of Moors, and there are also Portuguese, both married and single, and native Christians who since the fortress is small, stay in the city in which there must sometimes be 800, and sometimes 1000 Portuguese, not counting the women and servants. (A) That is inhabitants.
