_ 363 _ This country is now at war with many pagan kings, that is with Malabaris along the coast of India(A) and with the King of the Moluccas Islands who has mutinied,(B) and with the King of Ceylon, since he wishes to destroy a King who became Christian,(C) and with Turks in Ormuz who came to take a fortress in that kingdom, which is a vassal of the king of Portugal.(D) Although our men defeated them at sea, a general of ours has been defeated with 400 soldiers.(E) But another of our captains came upon the Turks whom he now has surrounded, and the Turks have said that they wish to hand over arms and money in exchange for being (A) The Portuguese then waged war against the mohammedans at the port of Cannanore (v Couto, Dec VII, lib 6, c4; lib 7, cc 2-3; Lib 8, c 3; Saldanha I 108). (B) He speaks of the King of the island of Ternate. (C) Mayadunna, King of Sitavaka (1521-81) then attempted to defeat the Christian King of Kotte, D John Dharmapala (1551-1597) by laying siege to the principal town of Katte (cf SG Perera, A History of Ceylon 53-54). (E) This leader of the Portuguese was D Alvaro da Silveira, brother of Father Gundisalvi da Silveira. According to Couto the Portuguese lost 70 in battle, and 30 others were captured by the Turks (Dec VII, Lib 7, c 9).
