_ 400 _ This bishop is raising a crusade and also tithes, as I understand, and the Pope thinks that in Spain they will be given a good share in all their revenues and that there are many things in that kingdom from which much money can be raised. This is what is claimed at present, and they truly think that they rule Peru. Summary of pp. 390-95 As well as this main claim, His Holiness sent his nuncio, who has already departed, in great haste because he has permission and order for Don Cesare, the eldest son of Don Fernando Gonzaga, to marry a niece of his, the sister of Borromeo, and there is a promise of a [cardinal's] hat for a brother of the said Don Cesare. He also takes other requests to King Philip, relating to particular interests of his nephews; I think he will be disappointed in many of them. The collector of this nuncio is Francisco de Aragonia, who hitherto has been secretary of briefs, in which office he also served the previous pope, and he also has great hopes of gain from this office. I raised the matter of the choice of this nuncio to Spain to report that His Holiness is sending by him a commission to Francesco Canobio, who was previously in Portugal as collector at the time of the legation of the Lord Cardinal and is now at the Spanish court without any office.
