_ 471 _ In the same year (1561) Lorenzo Perez de Tavora, the Ambassador in Rome, sent a letter to D. Sebastiao, Rome, on the 10th of February 1561, mentioning the story of the escape of Andre Ribeiro, the prisoner of Muscat:(56) My Lord, The bearer of this letter is Andre Ribeiro, who was taken prisoner in Muscat with João de Lisboa. Last August, he escaped from a small galley from Alexandria, where he was imprisoned and took refuge in Tripoli, Syria. From there he came to Cyprus and then to Venice, and then came to me here. This he did in order to give me news from Cairo and to ask me to assist him to go to Portugal. He has been a soldier in India, and in this capacity, I am told, served for many years in Nuno da Cunha’s fleet and has never been back to Portugal.
