_ 523 _ Following what I saw in a copy of the reports coming from those parts which Your Highness ordered to be given me, I am ever more convinced of glaring mistakes. As it was I, who sent the news from Constantinople on 12th of last month, Your Highness will see from the information accompanying this letter what suspicious there exist concerning the Turk. The King of Castile’s fleet, with those of his allies, numbers fifty-three galleys. These will increase when the galleys from Malta join him in Sicily. The King left Naples on 3rd of this month with his new general, who this year is Marco Antonio de Carretto, stepson of Andrea Doria. It is reported that he is going to Goletta and will take away with him three thousand Spanish soldiers, who were sent there this summer. With these and some others he will attempt to mount a raid on the Barbary Coast, but I believe that they will be prevented from doing so when they learn that the Turkish fleet has been seen in Zákinthos, when it was currently supposed to be in Constantinople. There is nothing more to be written about the council except that His Holiness is acting with all possible haste to have the prelates attend.
