_ 524 _ Here, the King of Castile has written to his ministers in the Kingdom of Naples, Sicily and Milan. All the said states are being made to come. It is hoped the Castilians will come, but it is understood that the French do not want to attend with them. If the emperor opens the Council, it is thought he will send ambassadors and prelates in the manner that I have already described. In France, they are holding their National Council and each day bad reports about religion abound. Accompanying this is a copy of a letter that the King wrote to his ambassador here, this letter being an apology for that congregation. The little power that he has to prevent these evils and the clear signs as to how they can be stopped, are well understood. The said ambassador showed this letter to the Pope, the cardinals and ambassadors, believing that he was thereby justifying his master’s cause. I am also sending a speech that the Grand Chancellor of France delivered on the first day of the Assembly, in which can be detected a fair number of suspicions. It is being published from French into Castilian so as to avoid the work of transcription there.
