_ 529 _ The Captain, Dom Antonio had received instructions from His Highness to make an open space and square in front of the fortress and to seize all the houses that were near to it and demolish them in Highness’s name, after deciding on all those that seemed to him suitable for the purpose, as well as to commander any others for the King’s officers and other people – he ordered some very fine houses for the Fathers of the Society from among those valued and handed them over to me in the name of His Highness. [350v] These houses belonged to a man called Franscisco Rodrigues, who had departed from here for Portugal and had left a considerable number of trustees to do with them whatever they thought best, either selling or letting them. Dom Antonio appropriated these houses from the trustees in the King’s name, and seized many other costly and valuable ones, such as those of the King and Queen of Ormuz, with others belonging to Portuguese and Moors. These houses were valued at six hundred cruzados, to be paid for by the King, seeing that the others were seized to make that open space with this title-deed and condition. Afterwards, they were revalued at eight hundred cruzados because Francisco Rodrigues’ trustees claimed that they had not been properly assessed.
