The Portuguese in the Sea of Oman

_ 79 _ soon began to hurl many insults at us, saying that we only had four days to live, and when these were up, they were going to it off our heads. They asked me why, since I was already lost, I was teaching the Christians. They told me I should not do it, because all of them en masse were going to kill me. When I saw this, I went quite exasperated to the captain who was called Mir Amasha(A) to ask his permission to teach the catechism to the Christians. I reported to him what his people had said to me, and with this they eased off. One Wednesday when I was at home, after having visited the Christians, many came to me with the news that Ormuz had been taken(B). This caused great consternation among the Christians, so much so that many of them had collected their effects to flee with them into the interior. But then there immediately came more news to the contrary, with which they calmed down somewhat. Now I hope that they may summon me from Ormuz, though I think that I shall be several days more in this (A) Mir Ahmad Shâh, a friend of the Portuguese (cf. SCHURHAMMER, Q 997 2005 4900). (B) Perhaps this report reached Moghistan on Wednesday, 21st September 1552 for the Muslims were withdrawing from the fortress of Ormuz, in Ponta de Cauru (cf. Schurhammer, Q4898 4900).
