_ 83 _ They escaped from them in as miraculous manner, more especially in the case of one of them which was altogether lost under the pelação of one of the galleys, the distress being such that the boatswain and chief gunner and the seamen took to the water, and some of the men were wounded by them, and yet, in this abandoned state they escaped their hands, and came on here in a badly conditioned state and the other, witnessing the straits this one was in, although she had her share of ill luck, judged the other could not escape, and, so that we should not remain bereft of news came on here to give information. The Captain summoned my father and myself and others of the land to whom was due he should afford this news, asking us what would be done with the city: both my father and myself replied, that we were ready to defend it, or die for it, if he so judged right, and it was agreed upon that by reason of the deficiency of water in the land, that the city should be abandoned, and that my father should proceed to Mogostão, to a fortress that is called Minao, so that from thence he, with Mirmaxa the Guazil of the lands of Mogostão should defend the watering places, and if able to do so, to provide refreshments to the fortress, and that I should remain in fortress with the King, and all the rest of the people to go where ever they judged best.
