On 16 October we completed the first day’s journey and camped in a small place built like a castle on a hill called Sinsin, which had a river of good water. On the following day we travelled from there to a rather larger place with similar Persian inhabitants, called [Kasamava]. Item: [Kasamava] is inhabited by Persians who live by cultivation. For these three days we had been travelling towards the north-west, having left Kashan in a northerly direction. On the following day we arrived in the ancient city of Qum. Item: Qum is a large city situated to the south-southeast in flat land close to some mountains. It has mud walls like Kashan, and similar houses. It possesses great mosques built in brick and beautiful tiles. One in particular is very sumptuous and a great place of pilgrimage, where the imam of the place is buried. It has about 2,000 Persian and Turkmen citizens and plentiful provisions, fruits, livestock and black, rough-haired camels. A river with much water passes by, which is torrential in winter. It flows under a great bridge with many arches, which forms the entrance to the city. The noblemen of this city are greatly dedicated to hunting, and for this reason
