_ 113 _ Armenia, until, three days’ journey short of the Caspian Sea, near a port called [Jaunas], it joins with another river which comes in from [Burgistan] called the [Lur]. It also receives the waters of the River Qara and flows into the Caspian Sea. Of the Euphrates we shall say…… [Here the document omits the next part of the journey, from Sultaniyeh to Bitlis Translator’s note]. Item: Returning to our journey, from this caravanserai we travelled through snowy mountains and difficult roads, sometimes with water from melting snow, sometimes over muddy earth, where everything was frozen. The road consisted of slippery flagstones, which caused the beasts to fall and have difficulties. We passed another caravanserai, a league from the one we had left, where there is a small place nearby, to the south [of the road], inhabited by Armenians, with another monastery near some mountains. On the other side [of the road] there is a valley called [Guzel Deré], which means “beautiful valley”, because it is cool. Half a league farther on we passed another caravanserai. These shelters are built so close together because the caravans need them in winter, at times they cannot travel father than from one to the next. Half a league beyond this one is the city of Bitlis, where we put up.
