_ 126 _ men were at one time found here disembowelled by thieves who lived here in caves. These were killed and dispersed by a Turkish sanjak from the city of Urfa. Beyond this valley there is a great spring of water which comes out in two places. It is called [Adna Pomari], “Sunday fountain”, because it was discovered on that day of the week. It drives many mills belonging to Armenians, many of whose settlements there are in these parts. The city of Urfa, about two leagues farther on, uses these mills. We did not dare to go there, because we knew that the Pasha there was in the habit of going to Kara Amid and took all the beasts there for himself. We put up in a village inhabited by Armenian peasants, half a league from the city. Item: Urfa is larger than Kara Amid and very ancient. It was formerly called……….(A). It is surrounded by an ancient stonework wall, with towers, but ruined in some places. It is said that it was built by Nimrod. It is situated to the west, near a range of mountains called [Karadj a Dagh), “black mountain”, and is peopled by Armenians and some Turkmens, most of them peasants.
