And those who are of this age go all covered with very large pieces of cloth which cover them completely, even the face; and underneath yet another veil of flannel. They wear white drawers as undergarments and cotton trousers with shoes like the men. They are small of stature and of pleasant appearance. I never saw a man on foot carrying a weapon other than a knife, and this is the custom throughout Persia and Turkey, nor did I see any one having a quarrel with another, for if there are any quarrels, even if they are only with the fists, justice has both participants thrashed if it finds out. Only those on horseback and there are many, for there are horses in the area, and they are very cheap; and some of them go to Ormuz and India carry short broad swords, which are only sharpened on one side. They are not courteous people, although the Turks are even less so; of little elegance, of similar stature and appearance to our people in the features of their faces; healthy, for I never saw one who appeared sick with inflamed glands or secretions, although they live like beasts, without any kind of doctors or apothecaries.
