_ 414 _ For His Catholic Majesty’s obligation to aid, assist and help in all needs of whatever nature which may arise cannot be greater than it is at present. But as His Catholic Majesty has realized that His Imperial Majesty believes that this absolute and negative repulse gives the King of France some kind of justification for his actions, in the eyes of those who do not understand or see the disadvantages which have been indicated in this matter, either because they do not understand them or because they do not have clear consciences; and also that His Imperial Majesty wishes to show the Orders and Estates of the Empire the goodwill he has for them, and is prepared to see him personal resources for their benefit. His Catholic Majesty thinks he must proceed in this business, not to bring about the marriage, which is so pernicious, as has been said and is increasingly more obvious and better understood, but to deal with the two other points by means of the third. For His Imperial Majesty indicates in his letter that the King of France proposes the restitution of Metz and Verdun, the renunciation and abandonment of his own friendship with Turk. The intention of sending his soldiers to the frontier area against him, and the friendship that must always exist (without observing neutrality) with His Catholic Majesty
