_ 443 _ In the same year (1568) Valid regulations were issued for the fortress of Ormuz, Goa, on the 20th of August 1568:(36) Standing Orders for the Fortress of Ormuz(A). (A) Cf.Falcão Figueiredo: “(The fortress of Ormuz) is the key to the State of India, visited by the whole world and the Venetians” (Livro de toda a fazenda, 1607, p.121). João de Barros (Déc.ll, bk.11, chap.11) reports that the residents of Ormuz say that the world is a ring and Ormuz a precious stone mounted in it. Gaspar Correia for his part says that the city of Ormuz has become so great through trade that “to all people, India is the ring and Ormuz the precious stone” (quoted in Lendas, I, p.185). Pyrard writes: “Continuing the farthest coast of India is Ormuz, a very large kingdom, five hundred leagues from Goa...close to Persia, on and in the mouth of the Strait of Persia, and at the mouth is a small island called Ormuz. It is possessed and governed by the Portuguese, who have had a fine and well guarded fortress there. This island is, after Goa, the richest and most profitable territory that the Portuguese possess in India...” (Viagem, 11, p. 178). (36) Document no. and reference.
