_ 449 _ the first day of October 1564. I sent them at once to that fortress, signed by myself, to be applied there, as has been done up to the present. I have been informed that some things were altered there and that others have been added to the great advantage of His Highness’s service and the profit of his treasury, and this has created some confusion. I have therefore set about revising those standing orders to make them clearer. I have discussed them with António de Teve, chief treasury superintendant in these parts, with Nuno Carneiro, secretary before my time, Gaspar Pires de Matos, formerly chief treasury officer of the fortress of Ormuz, Licenciado Francisco Alvares, Judge of Treasury Suits, Licenciado Martim Ferreira, Crown Agent, and other officials and other persons knowledgeable about that fortress. With their advice I have drawn up these standing orders in accordance with His Highness’s decree, which incorporate everything from the previous ones which it seemed necessary to leave as they were.
