I am told that this is a large sum for these expenses, and so I sent to inquire how much was given to the churches of Diu, Daman and Bassein, which are in the same position, and found that they were given about six hundred thousand reis per year. I ordered António Mendes de Castro, whom I have sent to Ormuz as His Highness’s chief treasury officer, to examine and investigate these payments and how necessary they were, and to determine what was reasonable in view of what was given to the other churches. I therefore order that if the said chief treasury officer has already decided what it is to receive by his writ or order issued before the arrival of the present orders, this is to be given to the church and stated in his order so that the amount is known. If he has not yet decided, it will be given up to six hundred thousand reis per year for these ordinary expenses by these standing orders. If the treasurer or vicar wishes to appeal about this, they will send his order to me here, but this paragraph will stand until I send an order to the contrary.
