The Portuguese in the Sea of Oman

_ 66 _ If anyone has doubts about this, I say that the devil has been able to place more doubts and difficulties in the way than learned men have been able to discover and resolve; for the people of this country (more here than anywhere else in India) are worse than devils themselves; they invent things, ways of stealing, sings and bargains which devils would not invent if they were to assemble in council. I would write about some of these matters if I had time, to amaze some confessors who are afraid to hear confession from the young boys in this country, while just one of these young boys would be capable of hearing confession from them all. 6. We hear confession from most of them, or rather from almost all of the people of this country, and from some who come from elsewhere with their crooked dealings. We are loved by them all; and there is one thing I wish Your Reverence to know, that there is not a Christian man in India who id he had a loaf would give even half of it to the Jesuits. I beg Your Reverence for your part to ensure that the confessors who come here should be the right ones; for the most learned are not qualified to hear confession where you are; I do not know how those who are less so would do it here.
