_ 87 _ large tomb built in brick like a square house, with a turret and four doorways without doors. These tombs are usual for all those Moors who can afford them. On the following day we camped by a large house; and on the day after that we arrived at a village called Sirgan, travelling all the time in an east-north-easterly direction. Item: Sirjan is situated to the west on flat land. It was formerly a large town, the seat of a king, which was captured and laid waste by Shah Ishmael. It now has about sixty inhabited houses and many others which are uninhabited. At the entrance there is a covered fountain of good water, and a mosque, and there are also two great avenues of fine pine-trees placed in line, which give very good shade over the width of two or three horses abreast and these come to an end at the entrance to the place. It is peopled by Persians, fair-skinned people, very pleasant. We found much to refresh us, especially delicious wild white grapes, long and stoneless, also flour, chickens and rice. We stayed here for two days, and on 16 August we left. We came to a village a league from there, small but with many plantations, orchards and cypresses. From here onward it was less hot by day and very cold at night. As we went on, I had the good company of people I cured, who called me Hakim, which means doctor. On
