I, D Francisco da Gama, Count of Vidigueira, Admiral, Viceroy of India, etc., etc, make known to those who see this writ that with regard to the resolution taken in my presence by the Judges of the Court of Appeal about what has been experienced of the Captains of Ormuz who in their own interests reduce the prices of goods sent to that port from India, Cambay, Persia, Arabia and other parts in order to buy them in great quantities and then sell them on their own account at higher prices, and for other just causes in His Majesty’s service and for the good of his vassals, this is my wish and pleasure. By this writ I forbid D. António de Lima, present Captain of that fortress, and those who succeed him, they or their agents, to purchase for themselves or through some intermediate person any goods whatsoever from the South or Cambay or any other part of the coast of India, Malindi or Bengal, or that are already in the fortress of Ormuz on the account of another person. They are rather to permit all goods from these parts to be sold freely to persons who take them away and their owners, both natives and foreigners, who wish to purchase them; they are not by any means or in any way to prevent these purchases, and they are
