_ 139 _ And to demonstrate his intent to all the people, after making the above declarations, he paid homage in his own name and on behalf of all the captains and alcaides-mores he had brought to D. Gonçalo de Meneses, Captain of the said Fortress, swearing, in accordance with his custom, to fulfil all obligations and be a loyal subject and vassal of the King of Portugal, his Lord and to accept whatever the law determines in such cases. D. Gonçalo de Meneses, empowered as he was to do so, accepted this fealty on behalf of the mentioned lord and ordered this account of it to be written and registered in the presence of the populace. And the King signed it and applied the royal seal in the presence of Simão Ferreira, his interpreter, who translated everything for him in detail and repeated in Portuguese everything the King said in his own language, in spite of the fact that the said King understands the two languages and that it is that which is here written.
