_ 160 _ Moghistan In Persia, opposite the island of Ormuz, is a region called Moghistan which belongs to the territory of the King of Ormuz, who has a Moorish captain there to collect his revenues from that part of Persia. Dom Luis de Ataide, Conde da Atouguia, when he was first Viceroy, was informed that it would be in the interest of the King our master to have a Portuguese captain there, and he appointed one João de Quadros. A nobleman with long service, who served there while he lived and on his death the King appointed one of his sons. But the King of Ormuz claimed back the right to appoint, saying that the information was wrong and that it was detrimental to his revenues as he received nothing when there was a Portuguese captain. There was an inquiry, and judgement was given in favour of the King of Ormuz against João de Quadros. The sentence was not pronounced until after the death of the Conde da Atouguia last time he was viceroy. This office was worth over three thousand cruzados a year to the said João de Quadros. In the island of Ormuz there are two galleys, and some foists which have a captain-in-chief who guarde the strait of Ormuz with them because of the many robbers and corsairs who sail there.
