_ 168 _ In the same year (1582) A Jesuit priest from a society in Portugal, sent a letter containing news received from the East Indies in 1582, and he mentioned that the Turks have a large fleet in the Red Sea:(35) 1. On 6 October the nau ‘Boa Viagem’ arrived in Goa, having been off the coast of India more than twenty six days, with contrary [162v] winds coming from the south. This city and the entire state was very sad and tense, since it was already October and there was no Portuguese nau there(A), nor was there any news through Ormuz, which (A) Ferreira Paez 77 says this about this ship which set sail from Lisbon in 1582. ‘The flag ship [Sao Felipe] arrived in this city [Lisbon]. The nau Chagas did not go through India and brought the cargo of the nau S Pedro. The nau S Luiz was lost in the Quilimaine river. Moreover the ship (galleon) S Francisco was even forced to return so that the only ship to reach India was the Boa Viagem (ib). See also (35) Document no. and reference.
