The Portuguese in the Sea of Oman

_ 195 _ It was an old custom that the King of Ormuz should pay every year a certain pension to the King of Lar(A) with the obligation that he should protect the caravans which came and went from Ormuz across the deserts of his kingdom, and this pension was called mocarrarias. Some seven years ago it happened that the King of Persia conquered the kingdom of Lar, and because of the war or through ignorance of the existence of this customary pension, he did not ask for it for six years. He leased the palaces and customs of the kingdom of Lar to a vassal of his named [Cambar] Beg. This man was told about the mocarrarias that were usually given, and sent to ask for them. At this time the customs at Ormuz were leased, and the captain at the time would not make a decision without informing the Viceroy. The reply took a long time to come from Goa, and in the meantime there was great fear of new disturbances. The lessee of the customs, seeing that Cambar Beg could hinder the caravans as he was threatening to do (either his own idea or someone’s advice), decided that he would rather risk a little than much, and paid the pension for that year out of his own pocket. (A) Marginal note: The kings of Ormuz is a vassal of Your Majesty, the king of Lar his neighbour on the mainland.
