_ 196 _ The fortress of Ormuz was peaceful, but almost obliged to pay the pension every year under the threat that if did not do so it would aggravate the Persians, who did not know what was involved in the usage. The pension was paid, and so it happened that this year, sending for the pension, they alleged not only right but possession. Since no message had come from Goa on the matter, the lessee was unwilling to pay without an order from the officials in charge of the treasury, but none of them wanted to be involved, fearing they would have to pay themselves. The matter escalated so that Cambar Beg hurried to Bandel(A) with some soldiers of the kingdom of Lar with the intention of making another fortress near our fortress there, in a place called [Tesgu], which supplies the fortress of Ormuz with water. When the people of Ormuz saw this move they redeemed their vexation with money, and with little honour and, as I have been informed, paid not only the pension for this year but of all the past years during which it had not been paid. The Persian army was at this time near the city of Tabriz in the kingdom of Media, and neither the Shah nor his officials could have any news of what was happening (A) Marginal note: Bandel is a town on the mainland opposite Ormuz where there is a fortress belonging to Your Majesty.
