_ 249 _ Ormuz, I think from Cosenza in the kingdom of Naples, with two companions. He seems a man of great virtue and esteem, and he was sent by His Holiness Pope Gregory and the illustrious Cardinal de’ Medici(A) to discuss with the monarch the submission of Ethiopia [to the Church of Rome] and other matters important for the well-being of that people and the good of Christendom in general, for it seems that His Holiness neither rested nor save expense to help souls. This good man endured many dangers, one of his companions was killed by pirates in the sea of Ormuz and the other had his hands maimed and is now returning to Italy; and he himself was badly wounded and lost all he had including his letters, and suffered many trials. But Our Lord miraculously saved him and brought him here alive, and even the most important letters were recovered thanks to the diligence of the Captain of Ormuz.(B) Arquivo Romano Society of Jesus: Jap-Sin 10 I ff 101-106v. [The original is in Spanish]. Sarza Denghel in 1584. (A) Cardinal Ferdinando de’ Medici. (B) Mathias de Albuquerque.
