_ 266 _ dates the villages usually appear in different order within the Nahiye, indicating that a new defter involved a new recording commission with a different route instead of a simple adaption of an earlier defter. The Mufassal also included lists of tribes in the province, treated in the same way. The defters were renewed at frequent intervals, often five years, and offer there-fore a detailed record of changes that have taken place. In addition to the above, known as Mufassal Tahrir Defteri, there are Mufassals of Mulk and Waqf, containing detailed accounts of the holdings, their ownership and revenues. The Waqf defters give full lists of pious and private waqfs, with the text or summary of the foundation deed and a statement of revenues and expenditure. Many of the Syrian and Palestinian waqfs are of the Mamlük period, and the Jerusalem waqf-registers even give details of some waqfs of Saladin, including those of his Khanqah, his Medrese, and his hospital in the city, (See Plate IX.). (b) Ijmal, The Ijmal Defteri of a province is a summary of the Mufassal, omitting the names of the inhabitants and giving the taxes only in lump sums for each territorial unit.
