_ 73 _ In the same year (1575) Father Domingos da Silva sent a letter to Father Joao de Bolanco, assistant commander of the Society of Jesus in Rome, Bassin, on the 28th of November 1575, that Diu was trading with Turkey, Cairo, Mecca and Jeddah:(22) In the year 1575 the Father Visitor ordered me on a mission to Diu, which is a fortress of the King of Portugal, formerly belonging to Sultan Bahadur, Emperor of Cambay(A) which the Portuguese not only won but defended in the two greatest sieges of our time, one by the Turks(B) and the other by the same Sultan Bahadur.(C) This fortress is situated at 18 degrees north on a headland of living rock (A) Bahadur, Sultan of Cambay (Gujarat) 1526-37 (Schurhammer Quellen, 531).
