The Portuguese in the Sea of Oman

_ 76 _ the great king of the Moguls, entered the kingdom of Cambay with a powerful army and not only occupied the whole territory of that kingdom but also threatened Diu and Daman, fortresses which my lord the King holds there. For this reason, and because of other disturbances in the Persian Strait and Sea, it has been necessary to divert all the forces of this State to defence against this powerful enemy, and the Lord Viceroy went there in person with all his armed forces. It was thus necessary to defer my departure for Persia until agreement was reached with Akbar, and so passed the whole of the summer, which here ends at the beginning of May. During the winter, which lasts until the end of September, it is not possible to sail anywhere in these seas, and to pass through the Strait of Persia one must wait until December. I am on my way to Ormuz, and when I arrive there (which will take all of January), I shall go at once to the Sophy to carry out my mission, which I hope will be as advantageous as possible. I shall be pleased if I am successful, more for the satisfaction that it will give Your Majesty than for the honour and glory which may accrue to me from its effects. If it is possible I shall write to Your Majesty both overland and by sea, if Our Lord wills. From Goa 25 December 1575.
