_ 81 _ were unable to pass through and had turned back, one of them with the letters and money, and the other only with the money, because he said he had sent the letters. The Father Visitor employed all haste in sending them some assistance in the past year(A) and for this purpose sent from Bassein to Diu a Father of the Society,(B) in order that he might send the Father Patriarch and the other Fathers through some Moors about 800 ducats,(C) which by order of His Highness the King of Portugal were given by the Governor of the State [of India], part in the past year and part in the one before year. But it was not possible to do anything, because the Moors could not pass through with the money as had already been said. They also returned other letters which had been sent in some fustas by way of the Strait. This year the Father is again writing to the same Fathers by the same routes of the Strait and of Diu.
