_ 88 _ The most illustrious Sr. D.Luís de Ataide, Conde de Atouguia, presented to the Board some motives and reasons on the basis of which it was to be determined for the present who should be and assume the position of captain of the fortress of Ormuz, since Ruy Gonçalves da Camara was coming to the end of his term of office there and it was necessary that another captain should go there to take office first. There were eminent noblemen of great merit, both as to descent and as to service, who were putting forward their claims to be presented to the said fortress, and for this reason the above-mentioned must agree at this meeting who should be take office first. He himself did not wish to take part in the resolution of this case because he was a kinsman of some of the parties who were making claims, and for other reasons, in the interests of His Highness and fairness to the parties. He ordered the Chancellor and the other High Court judges named above, that with the obligation of their offices and their customary integrity, and the confidence that His Highness and he himself had in their administration of justice, they should determine and agree who should be captain of the said fortress and take over as soon as Ruy Gonçalves completed his term.
