_ 92 _ customary integrity and trust which His Highness and the Chancellor reposed in them to administer Chief Justice, they should determine and agree who should be Captain of the fortress and assume office as soon as Rui Gonçalves came to the end of his term; and so that he should be more mindful of this obligation, he ordered the Chancellor to administer to them an oath on the Holy Gospels and a missal on which they placed their hands. The Chancellor with this mandate in addition to the oath they had taken on entering office told them they should determine this matter with the integrity which the office, correction, the matter, demanded, if only because the service of his Lord, the King and the right of the persons concerned as he required of them. They promised to do their duty under their oath, in addition to the obligations of the posts they occupied. They signed, and I, Gomes de Figueiredo, scrivener of civil suits, wrote this. It is of great service to His Highness and the execution of Chief Justice for the persons concerned.
