Likewise corregidores may grant the right of appeal in suits in which these corregidores are permitted their instructions to grant the right of appeal, and in all the others they shall apply the instructions to district corregidores where they are applicable. District corregidores may issue letters of surety in cases where they are permitted to do so, but the Captains of the fortresses shall not issue them, nor are they in any way whatsoever to intervene in the matter. The said Chief Justices are not to issue letters of surety in the case of death, nor are they to issue letters of surety in other cases which are confined to the Criminal Chief Justice, to whom the instructions of the corregidor of the court apply. The Chief Justices in Mozambique, Ormuz, Malacca, Molucca and Macao are excepted, because these shall issue letters of surety in all cases and in those in which the Corregidor of the court issues them in the Court of Appeal in accordance with their instructions. Chief Justices may issue them with the joint agreement of the Captain and the Chief Treasury Officer of the fortress; and if no Chief Treasury Officer is available they are to despatch them together with the factor.
