_ 96 _ serving in that year shall take his place. Two of them in agreement will suffice to grant or refuse letters. The release of the persons to whom they are issued will take place before the Chief Justices. This is my wish in consideration of the distance from these places to the city of Goa where the Court of Appeal is situated and of the great inconvenience suffered by persons in travelling to such remote places. The said Chief Justices will to have competence in civil cases involving up to forty thousand reals in moveable assets and up to thirty thousand reals in real estate; and those in the fortresses of Mozambique, Ormuz, Malacca, Molucca and Macao will have competence involving up to eighty thousand reals in moveable goods and up to seventy thousand reals in real estate; the said Chief Justices are to pass for appeal to the Court of Appeal those cases which exceed the stated amount and which do not lie within their competence. In criminal cases Chief Justices together with Captains shall have the same competence as the Captains of my distant territories, as defined in the ordinance in Book 2, Para 41, both over the Portuguese and the natives; and they are to execute the sentences they give in cases which lie within their competence in accordance with the present instructions and the abovementioned ordinance.
